- c.1380, from O.Fr. magistrat, from L. magistratus "a magistrate," originally "magisterial rank or office," from magistrare "serve as a magistrate," from magister "chief, director" (see master). Applied in M.E. to civil officers in charge of laws. Magisterial (1632) is from L. magisterialis "of or pertaining to the office of magistrate, director, or teacher," from magisterius "having authority of a magistrate," from magister.

магистрат 1) Судья первой инстанции, избираемый в городских районах и рассматривающий дела о нарушениях правил дорожного движения и мелких преступлениях, а также мелкие гражданские иски. Магистраты могут также проводить предварительное расследование крупных преступлений и принимать решение о передаче дела в вышестоящие судебные инстанции. Суд магистрата иногда называется полицейским судом police court. См. тж. Justice of the Peace 2) ист. Депутат генеральной ассамблеи General Assembly в Колонии Массачусетского залива Massachusetts Bay Colony, имевший также должность в исполнительном органе власти и работавший в составе комитета (комиссии).
